What is SQ?

When I started into ICE I was really into sound quality, after reading thru forums and asking friends who are into ICE also, they have their own understanding of what is SQ , most of them have different answers, that's why I got intrigued with it. But after installing my own ICE, I had a grip of why they too have different understanding of the word SQ.

So, what is SQ for you?

Simply put: its a perfect reproduction of sound frequencies coupled with perfect balance, imaging and staging. Close your eyes when you listen to a live orchestra performance.. when that same sound, staging, imaging, etc is produced in your car, then its SQ nirvana.

Listen to vinyl's ICE for better appreciation of what SQ is..

SQ...hmmm...from my experience and understanding since i started to be exposed to this type of system way back in high school, there are two sides to it.
1) THE 1st SIDE is regarding the listener's side (could be the owner or simply anyone listening to the system). which is the tricky part. this side is very much dependent on the a. inclination, b. influence, c. understanding of the listener. A. INCLINATION speaks of the listeners preference. he/she may know what or how an sq system should sound like but prefers it to sound the way he wants it suiting his/her type of music he/she listens to (example: the other listener might feel that a system has too much emphasis on it's highs but the other listener prefers it that way). B. INFLUENCE speaks of what he/she was told to believe what an sq system should be made of or should sound like (which are both also was acquired three these 3 factors) C. UNDERSTANDING speaks of what he/she had read, been told and experienced of what an SQ system should sound like (sometimes already taking into consideration the 2nd side which are competition guidelines.

2) THE 2nd SIDE is plainly based on (which is more with basis like guidelines from IASCAs or EMMAs) what for these orgs are what they define and require a system should produce is called as an SQ system. However, tunning your system into "competition" setting may not give you your everyday listening satisfaction because normally the guideline settings may be short of the "highs" (which in layman's term is usually called the treble) and more on the mids for the vocals so it takes accepting, adapting and getting used to...

so, which type of SQ enthusiast are you?

Hehe di na sila interested sa "old school" set-up with old school car audio brands and equipments paps. mas gusto nila yung mga bago na generation such as yours. One of those who won had a combination set-up same as yours so i think they'd rather listen to your ICE

Very well and concisely said. I wish my H.U. has multiple adjustable preset settings of the EQ. Meron ba nun? Like for example I'm listening to acoustic I would just tap a preset EQ setting for acoustic and when I wanna listen to RnB different setting na naman and so on and so forth. Because at flow we have this amp or eq console (I really forgot what it's called) which has preset EQ settings. We play bossa and chillhouse in the early hours from dinner till 10 and we have an EQ setting for that. When we play RnB it's a different EQ setting na naman and also when we play upak house another. Different music genres have different EQ settings and it's always not the same if you set your EQ as is on all types of music. Does your H.U.'s have this? Kay sometimes kauti sagi adjust sang EQ ko when I change cd's. hehehehe.

@ str8jacket, IMHO most Headunits have EQ presets already but usually 3-5 lang. I used to have a pioneer and sony na H.U and both have preset EQ which are set for your listening. If you want to have more options and you believe that you want to have a better sound by maximizing your HU Bro, I suggest is get the series (model) of your H.U. and search the preset settings of it over the internet for the Low-Mid-High. (I believe yours is a JVC right?) Then check the suggested EQ parameter of it for Low-Mid-High settings of your H.U, if it's not in the internet then you could also tweek the EQ settings of your HU depending on the range of Low-Mid-High that you want.

Or better pre let's tune it during the next EB, I'm sure the guys will love to help you and share points regarding your concern that's the beauty of this club

pioneer 7750 bro..medyo complicated nga mag adjust ng eq. It's ok naman now. But I don't think it has like multiple preset eq settings that I can choose on the fly.

Here's what my good friends selling Audison-Hertz have to say when AUDITIONING AN SQ SETUP:

I think it would help first if you know what to look out for. The IASCA CD has a visual diagram of instrument placements in its accompanying booklet. Its a great CD to familiarize/train yourself with.
Thorugh time I adapted and have a reference CD of my own which I usually play when I audition a SQ setup. These are a few things that I look out for when I audition a system (this is my personal style so what works for me maybe different with other people).

1. I make sure na na break in na ang system. Para siguradong nag p produce na yung speakers ng natural sound nila. Hirap kung bago pa lang and you will do critical auditioning. Turn on the engine at aircon, recline your seat farthest away and let your head rest.

2. After I insert my reference CD, I start with the volume control. I normally listen to music only as loud as a normal speaking voice or around 90db.

2. I first test the Frequency Response of the system. FR is the ability of the system to play all the 20khz-20hz range (from those low, low sub notes to your highest of high sa tweets). I usually play a track that has a live orchestra for this type of test.

3. Next, I look for IMAGING. The system should play accurately where the instruments are coming from in a given imaginary stage. Is the violin coming from far right? Is the singer on the center (take note: sometimes hindi lagi centro ang singer)? Is the bass guitar on the mid left etc.
With this type of test, you should be very very familiar with the track. A jazz track is great for this.

4. Then I look for STAGING. Is the stage above your dash (heigth). Is the width extends from pillar to pillar or more(width)? Is the music seem extending sa hood ng car mo (depth)? Dito you should be able to identify how high, wide and deep your imaginary stage is.

5. Lastly, I look for the Dynamics or LINEARITY of a system. This is the time I crank up the volume to high levels and turn it down to low levels . Dapat the system can still maintain its composure. Hindi dapat mag degrade yung SQ ng sytem niya.

Nice CD for SQ tuning. Try to listen it first sa good home audio system to know what it should sound then make it as reference and make it sound the same in your car.

Dal-on ko if maka pa iloilo ko currently that cd na kay kneetamps KAC bacolod, maganda kasi may booklet guide to aid you in listening while looking into the time when the CD is playing.

Audiophile CD sharing tayo pre will bring some of my CD used for tuning then pahiram din or pa copy ng sa iyo dyan.
